Cinemagraph of Tiernan

I have been playing around with a new photo technique called Cinemagraphs. It is a way of animating and looping a still image for presentation on the web. My daughter Tiernan graciously agreed to be my model for the first experiment. Thanks Tiernan!

I think it turned out out pretty cool and I hope to do some more soon. Let me know what you think?

USA Track & Field

The USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships was held in Eugene this week. Athletes who placed in the top 3 in each event will represent the United States in South Korea at the the IAAF World Championships later this year.

Register-Guard photographers Keven Clark, Brian Davies and I teamed up to produce an image gallery from the week. Follow the link for the week in pictures from Historic Hayward Field here.

Trail’s End

Former Register-Guard copyeditor Teresa Carp and I teamed up on a story for Western Horseman that published this month. The six page article features a couple that provide large animal burial services on their farm near Noti, Oregon.

This is the second time that I have photographed Omega Farms, the first being several years ago for the Register-Guard. David and Marta Heidt are wonderful people who are providing a much appreciated service to horse owners looking for a dignified burial for their equine partners.

It was great to work with Carp again, with the added bonus that my good friend Darrell Dodds from Idaho days is the publisher of Western Horseman now.

The Land of Ozperger’s

I returned to the audio slideshow format on a project to document the Eugene, Oregon based Bridgeway House as it brings a group of children living with Autism together to produce a play for the 5th year in a row.

I was very happy with the way this multimedia piece turned out. The subject matter lent itself well to still image coverage, giving me a chance to look for moments rather than video sequences to tell the story. The kids also responded well to being interviewed individually with a low key and simple digital recorder as apposed to being put in front of a video camera.

The piece has been well received in the community as well, the production sold out on its one and only performance and viewers have reached out to thank me for the effort. Very gratifying.

Oregon Truffle Festival

Had the opportunity to photograph a portion of the Oregon Truffle Festival a month ago for the Orange County Register. It was a pleasure working with reporter Cathy Thomas and the fun group of truffle fans from all over the world who took part and allowed me to take their images. Busy month creating multimedia

Just got back from a 2913 mile round trip to Glendale, AZ to cover the Oregon Duck football team’s appearance in the BCS National Championships. Register-Guard reporter Mark Baker, DOP Rob Romig and I produced a host of multimedia projects and print edition stories over the 8 day trek. And if all of that wasn’t enough, the same week I returned, I produced the panorama of the new Matthew Knight Arena above and completed a virtual tour from center court as part of the RG’s special coverage of the opening. The panorama shows the finished facility, but also time-elapses over a nearly 2 year period of construction so you can see the bones of the place. Click on the pano above or here to take the tour.

Oregon Civil War: 1994-2009

I recently did an edit of the last 16 years of images from the state’s annual football rivalry into a slideshow for the Register-Guard website. The images made by staff photographers, including myself, chronicle the yearly battle between Oregon and Oregon State known as the Civil War.
